ISSN Slovenia

Member since 1992

The ISSN Centre Slovenia joined the ISSN Network by signing the agreement with the ISSN International Centre on 23 November 1992. It was established by the National and University Library in the same year. Up until March 2023, the centre operated within the serials collection department. Since then, it has been integrated into the National Bibliographic Centre, along with ISBN and ISMN agencies.

Representatives of the National and University Library applied for membership in the ISSN Network shortly after Slovenia declared its independence. They recognized the importance of continuing the practice of assigning ISSNs to continuing resources published in Slovenia. In 1995, The National and University Library and the national ISSN centre hosted the 21st Directors’ Meeting in Ljubljana. Since its inception in 1992, the ISSN Centre Slovenia has had four directors.

The centre collaborates daily with publishers and librarians. It informs and educates the publishers about assignment policies and advises them on how to meet the requirements of the ISSN Network to acquire ISSN. Information about ISSN is also included in the training for librarians, in addition the centre is available to assist with the cataloguing of continuing resources.

The ISSN Centre Slovenia regularly includes new titles to the ISSN database and updates the existing records. To date, the centre has assigned more than 11.000 ISSNs.
