ISSN Slovakia

Member since 1993

The National ISSN Agency in the Slovak Republic was established in 1993 in the Slovak National Library in Martin. On February the 1st 1993, an agreement was signed between the International ISDS Centre (since 1994 ISSN) in Paris and the Slovak National Library in Martin. In 1997, the ISSN NA moved to the University Library in Bratislava. On 22 September 1997, an amendment to the agreement between the ISSN IC and University Library in Bratislava was signed.

The University Library in Bratislava has been assigning the ISSN to serial publications since 1997. The separate department has been operating as the ISSN National Agency since spring 1998.

The agency identifies serial publications published in Slovakia, manages the National ISSN Database, processes ISSN records according to the international rules, updates them and makes them available through a freely accessible database on the Internet. The new local system in Koha has been tested since October 2022 and it has been in full use since March 2023.

The National ISSN Agency provides services and consultations to publishers and public. It provides free EAN/ISSN barcodes, searches and information from the ISSN database, cooperates with the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic, which registers periodicals and electronic periodicals, and also with scientific libraries in Slovakia. Within the library, it cooperates with several departments: Department of Periodicals, Department of Union Catalogues, Department of Digitization and Deposit of Digital Resources (DDR). The Centre cooperates on project of archiving born digital continuing resources with assigned ISSN numbers. There are 380 resources archived in DDR which are accessible directly from the ISSN database.

Now, the Slovak ISSN database contains 7499 registered records (3023 published and 4476 ceased titles).

In February 2024, the process of the accession of Slovakia to the Statutes of the ISSN International Centre has been completed. Now, we are waiting for the working agreement.

From the very beginning, Mrs. PhDr. Beáta Katrincová was the Head of the Slovakia ISSN National Centre, until October 2022, when she retired. Now, there are 2 persons working in the NC – Mgr. Martin Lacko (since 1998) and Mgr. Andrea Hulalová (since 2021).
