ISSN Lithuania

Member since 1993

The ISSN agency of Lithuania has been operating since the end of 1993. Almost immediately after the declaration of independence in 1991, the national ISSN agency was established. In 1992, the Book Chamber was attached to the Martynas Mažvydas National Library. The Centre of the Bibliography and Book Science of the National Library was designated to take over functions of the ISSN system in the country as it began to develop a modern bibliographic accounting and control system. A distribution of the ISSNs to the Lithuanian serials started in 1994. Since 2000, the agency has provided barcodes to serials published in Lithuania.

In 2003, the Lithuanian ISSN Agency started using the LIBIS system (Lithuanian Integrated Library Information System). When the LIBIS subsystem of electronic resources has been created, the agency actively takes part in the registration of electronic resources and advertises them through the ISSN Register. That is helpful for the publishers and encourages them to register with the ISSN Agency. The Lithuanian ISSN Agency has assigned more than 6300 ISSNs for Lithuanian serials and other continuing resources. Every year, an agency in Lithuania assigns approximately 150 ISSN codes. The most active year for the ISSN assignment was 2013. That year, 327 ISSNs have been assigned. The Lithuanian ISSN Agency uses the UNIMARC bibliographic format, and cataloguing is ISBD. Requests and inquiries for ISSN assignments are received online.

During the entire period of existence of the Lithuanian ISSN Agency, the following directors worked: Virginija Aleksiejūnaitė (1994-1996), Danutė Petrauskienė (1996-2010), Marta Ilgevičienė (2010-2012), Alvida Kasiulytė (since 2012).

Occasionally, the place of work is replaced by participation in the International Vilnius Book Fair.
