ISSN Malaysia
Member since 1979
Perpustakaan Negara Malaysia (PNM) has been appointed as the ISSN Malaysia National Centre. As the ISSN Malaysia National Centre, the network of expertise exists through ISSN applications consisting of government departments/agencies, private agencies and companies, public higher learning institutions and private colleges, government and private schools and associations registered with the Jabatan Pendaftaran Pertubuhan Malaysia (Registrar of Societies Malaysia (ROS)).
PNM through Pusat Bibliografi Negara (PBN) has been assigned as the ISSN National Centre starting June 1979 until now. At the initial stage, local publishers had little understanding of the importance of the ISSN. However, upon realising the importance of the ISSN and subsequently wanting to get international recognition of their published material, applications for the ISSN have been increasing every year.
Starting in June 1979, the staff involved in the process of granting ISSN to local publishers consisted of Librarians and Librarian Assistants under the Service to Publishers Programme.
Anecdotes that can be shared since its establishment is the confusion that often occurs to publishers to distinguish between ISSN and ISBN. Thus, various programmes and activities involving Services to Publishers have helped and made it easier for publishers to get information related to the ISSN and then the process of applying for an ISSN can be carried out.
