ISSN Japan

Member since 1976

The Japanese National Centre for ISSN is located in the Serials and Non-book Materials Division, Acquisitions and Bibliography Department, National Diet Library (NDL). The NDL took over becoming a Japanese National Centre for ISDS in 1973 and has actively served as the Japanese National Centre for ISDS since January 1976. The name changed to Japanese National Centre for ISSN in 2002. In 2022, a Working Agreement was signed between the ISSN International Centre and the NDL.

As of the end of February 2025, the Japanese National Centre for ISSN manages about 50,000 bibliographic records for serials with ISSN. Newly registered ISSN in 2024 amounted to 683 records. For the permanent enrichment of the ISSN International Register, work is also being done on the correction of existing records based on deposited materials.

Throughout its history, the center was staffed by a director and two or three staff members. As of February 2025, the director is MITOBE Yumi. Seven other members in the NDL perform incidental work with ISSN.

Thanks to the cooperation of publishers in Japan and other ISSN Network members in the world, the Japanese National Centre for ISSN has been able to continue the challenge to achieve its mission of promoting ISSN. It appreciates all past and future cooperation and support from publishers and other Network members.
