ISSN Brazil
Member since 1980
Unlike in other countries, the Brazilian ISSN Centre (CBISSN) is not located in a national library. In Brazil, the ISSN Centre is operated by the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Ibict), a research unit of the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation. Ibict was founded in 1954 as the Brazilian Institute of Bibliography and Documentation (IBBD), after UNESCO suggested that Brazil establish a national bibliographic centre. In the 1970s, Brazil underwent a major reorganisation of its science and technology activities, and the then IBBD also underwent a transformation, including a change of name to the Brazilian Institute of Information in Science and Technology (Ibict).
In this context, Ibict became part of the National Centre of the ISSN network in 1975. In 1980, Ibict established itself as the Brazilian ISSN Centre, the only institution in Brazil authorised to assign the ISSN code.
Since then, the Brazilian ISSN Centre has sought to improve its practices, promote the importance of the ISSN code in different spaces, contribute to other colleagues and centres in the ISSN network, support Brazilian publishers, dialogue with institutions that work with other codes and that have synergies with the role of the ISSN, among other activities. It is with great pleasure that we have recorded important milestones for Brazil in the management of the ISSN, such as hosting the meeting of the Directors of the National Centres, participating in the Governing Board and, more recently, chairing the Board.
With more than 50,000 ISSN codes assigned, we emphasise the importance of working together within the network to share the best practices and contribute to everyone's success. Therefore, we would like to acknowledge the excellent work of our colleagues in the National Centres, as well as the efforts and work of the ISSN International Centre team.
The Brazilian ISSN Centre team currently consists of seven people: Ana Carolina Simionato Arakaki (Coordinator); Érika Cruz da Silva Tinôco (Associate); Giovana Cavalcanti de Mesquita (Associate); Jordana Souza Borges (Associate); Maria Nazaré de Carvalho (Associate); Tamiles de França Ferreira (Associate); Tainá Batista de Assis (ISSN Network Board).
Long live the ISSN! We congratulate, acknowledge and appreciate its importance!
One anecdote:
We once received a call from someone asking for the ISSN of the bag of coffee from that year's harvest. In fact, the caller wanted the barcode to sell the bag of beans and needed the ISSN code to create his own barcode.
