ISSN Finland
Member since 1975
Finland’s national ISSN Agency was established in the National Library of Finland (University of Helsinki Library back then) in 1975 as entrusted by the Finnish Government.
We have two employees: Heidi Ronkainen (2007-) and Kirsi Pihlajalahti (2009-). We both work at the ISBN Agency as well. The connection between the Agencies is close, both are situated at the National Bibliographic Agency and we use the same system. Our daily work is based on webservices.
Cooperation with the Legal Deposit Office is close. Earlier they took part in the arrival control of magazines and the sorting of publications between ephemeral collection and the national collection. That affected more to the basis on wich ISSNs were assigned. Previously we also assigned ISSNs only by request but now we assign them actively when we come across a publication without ISSN.
Projects and changes from 2000 onward:
ISSN register was built in the beginning of 2000
renewed system 2016
current system 2024
Suoma -database (published in 1.10.2001) helped us to control online journals, but it is not in use anymore
indexing of the periodicals started approximately 2008
project of assigning ISSNs to journals without ISSN 2012
project of assigning ISSNs to digitized journals (by National library of Finland). Likely to continue in 2025
